Basic Electronics – Digital Logic with Andrew Milne 2015

Learning how to create with electronics can be a very challenging process for an individual to learn without significant support. Many concepts and skills need to be internalized before independent learning and development can efficiently take place. In response to this obstacle for developing media creators, Video Pool Media Arts Centre will provide a mini-course in DIY Technology Design and Creation for Winnipeg media artists.
The mini-course will provide participants with the theory and skills needed to program and integrate basic electronic components with microcontrollers. As well, it will prepare participants with basic concepts from physics while providing easy to understand design and problem solving strategies.

Each day will be broken down into learning sections that will build skills and knowledge over the four workshop period. The sections will include: Concepts from Physics, Group Problem Solving Exercises, Notes & Journaling, Electronics Theory and Circuit Analysis, Basic Programming Concepts and Individual Project Time. Each component will include hands on experimentation.

Participants will be presented with group problem solving exercises that will involve the collaborative solving of simple logistical problems as a way of applying presented theory and strategies. Journaling and reflection will be encourage to support a criticality of the technological process that are selected by the group, encouraging participants to assess the cultural and human impact of the solutions and process that they are engaging.

Each workshop will have time dedicated to a flexible individual project that will reinforce the concepts presented earlier in the day, allowing participants to explore and be creative while developing practical skills. Emphasis will be placed on enabling the participants to navigate, understand and interpret available sources of information on the internet in order to empower participants to support their personal projects and continue to develop their knowledge after the workshop has completed.
