Speak in ASL

2003, Video, 15:30 (Colour, Stereo) [clip]

by Jolanta Lapiak

The Speak in ASL is a hilarious candid video, in which two native Signers approached a hearing person in public and conversed with them in American Sign Language as if they were on Eyeth instead of Earth. This work concerns colonialism in languages and cultures as well as compromises a preservation of cultural diversity. "It has often been said that if you want to destroy a people, first destroy it's language." -- Mark Tully, 1991.
